In 2005, NASA launched Deep Impact, a probe sent to study comet Tempel 1.
Deep Impact was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies and operated by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with Michael A'Hearn as principal investigator. It flew on a Delta II rocket as part of the Discovery Program. It also took part in EPOXI.
