In 1958, Explorer 1 lifted off, the first satellite of the United States.
Explorer 1 rode a Juno I rocket and carried a Geiger counter. Its signal was lost on May 23, 1958, but it stayed in orbit until March 31, 1970. It was built by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
