In 1958, Vanguard 1 lifted off, the fourth artificial satellite ever to orbit Earth.
Vanguard 1 weighed less than one and a half kilograms at launch and drew power from a Bell Solar Battery. Its signal was lost in May 1964, and it remains in orbit as a derelict spacecraft.
