In 2013, the ALMA radio telescope opened in Chile's Atacama Desert, high in the Andes.
ALMA stands about 5,059 meters above sea level, in the Antofagasta Region. Its operators include the European Southern Observatory and the National Science Foundation. It is also part of the Event Horizon Telescope.
