In 1957, Sputnik 1 lifted off, the first artificial satellite of Earth.

Sputnik 1 measured 58 centimeters across and weighed 83.6 kilograms at launch. It lifted off from Gagarin's Start and fell silent on October 26, 1957. It completed 1,440 orbits before it reentered the atmosphere on January 4, 1958.
